The movie stars Todd as a recently widowed missionary returning to her home in England from Jamaica. During the voyage, she meets Milland, a charming though dangerous rascal who is wanted by police in connection with some unsavory dealings. Milland contracts malaria while onboard the ship and Todd nurses him back to health. In London, Todd settles into her home, taking in boarders to make ends meet. Milland arrives, moves in, and proclaims his love for her. Todd is thrilled, but it seems rather obvious that Milland is only toying with her. Milland finds some letters written to her by her friend, Fitzgerald, in which Fitzgerald reveals some of her sexual indiscretions. Since Fitzgerald is now married to the wealthy Huntley, Milland believes he can use the letters to blackmail Fitzgerald. Todd's love fo@太阳的女人@r Milland is so great that she goes along with the plan. Huntley, however, learns of the scheme and also uncovers details of Milland's shady past. Fearing for her lover's safety, Todd poisons Huntley, then remains silent when Fitzgerald is arrested for the murder. Milland has by now genuinely fallen in love with Todd and the two make plans to leave England. Before they can depart, one of Milland's former lovers shows up and Todd, in a jealous rage, kills Milland, then turns herself into the p@偸拍美女@olice. This is an intriguing film, although a little on the talky side. The performances are excellent throughout, with Milland shining as the cad, the type of role in which he excelled. Though he spent most of his time making films in the US, he occasionally returned to his native England for a production and this was his first British film since FRENCH WITHOUT TEARS in 1939. Director Allen was also an Englishman who chose to work in the US, this being his first directorial effort in his homeland. This was the fourth and last time Milland and Allen would work together, their pairing having begun in 1944 with the wonderfully eerie THE UNINVITED.

On a rainy night in 1928 in a Pennsylvania factory town called Iverstown, Martha Ivers (Janis Wilson), thirteen years old, is trying to escape from the guardianship of her wealthy, domineering aunt. Her friend, the street-smart, poor Sam Masterson (Darryl Hickman), comes for her through her bedroom window, but Martha's aunt catches them. While Sam slips out unnoticed, Martha hits Mrs. Ivers on the head, causing her to fall down the long staircase and die. Though Sam saw nothing, the event was witnessed by Walter O'Neil (Mickey Kuhn), the son of Martha's tutor (Roman Bohnen), known as Mr. O'Neil. Martha lies about the incident to Mr. O'Neil, and Walter supports her.[5] Mr. O'Neil suspects what happened but presents Martha's version of events to the police, that an intruder is responsible; he makes use of his knowledge by @蜜蜂矿池@having her marry his son. When Martha reacts with joy to the news of Sam's return, Walter's jealousy provides an additional motive. Walter forces Toni to set Sam up. Sam is beaten and driven out of town, but he is too tough to be intimidated. When all else fails, Walter makes a half-hearted attempt to kill Sam himself, but is easily disarmed. Martha then inadvertently blurts out the couple's fears of blackmail, which prove to be groundless: Sam says he did not witness the death. Martha breaks down and laments that he left without her all those years ago, taking with him her only chance for love and freedom. Sam is torn between his old love and his new. Although he eventually forgives Toni for betraying him, he and Martha spend an idyllic day together, rekindling his feelings for her. Walter arranges to meet Sam to finally settle matters. Before Sam arrives, Walter gets drunk and Martha finds out about the meeting. When Walter falls down the stairs and is knocked unconscious, Martha urges Sam to kill him. Sam instead brings Walter around. Martha pulls out a gun and threatens to shoot Sam in "self defense" as an intruder. However, Sam gambles that Walter will not back up her story; he turns his back on her and leaves. Walter embraces and kisses his wife; then he points the gun at her midriff. @哈利波特与火焰杯电子书@ 八十年代的恐怖电影《处刑在午夜》（10 to Midnight）中，外表不佳却颇具性格气概的老电影人查尔斯·布朗森在片中饰演一个警探，逮捕到一位专门辣手摧花的杀人犯，苦于没有证据，老查不得已设法编造证据，想送他进大牢，不料被穿帮，凶手放出来后，决定对老查的女儿下手以实行报复。为什么老查根本找不到凶手的罪证呢，原来凶手每次行凶前必把自己的衣服脱光，你想找到任何沾有血迹的衣服、裤子、鞋子，都难如登天。于是，反一号男主角吉恩·戴维斯在片中有一半的戏份都要光着身子。《处刑在午夜》在裸露尺度的把握上，真正做到了“男女平等”，你脱我@计算机2级考试@也脱，像吉恩·戴维斯这种可以走偶像路线的男星，接拍《处刑在午夜》实在得不偿失，别说必须时不时的衣不蔽体，角色形象也负面到极点，从片子的票房来看，他也真是白忙了一场。可能从一开始，吸引他的只是赫赫有名的曾导过黑白原版《恐怖角》（Cape Fear）与《纳瓦隆大炮》（The Guns of Navarone）的大导演J·李·汤普森吧，可惜人有失手马有失蹄，这一回他可是脱得很没价值呐！
